The 89 should have a program called CONSULT on it, so it should be a OBD 1 car.

Rather than investing in the diagnostic tool (which will require Nissan model specific software BTW) I'd spend the money on a FSM (Factory Service Manual), this outlines the code testing procedure for pulling diagnostic codes out of the ECU.

It then will have a chart outlining what each code means, and an explination on how it's triggered.

I would not suggest converting to OBDII... for several reasons, for tuning purposes OBDI is easier to work around. OBDII debuted on the 96 240SX w/ KA24DE, different engine, and totally different wiring/sensors than any of the previous years. A conversion wouldn't be impossible however it would be rediculously hard for such a small benefit.

My intention for the question was for the online tool. You know to use with the laptop or pda. It is able to give you the use to the second for everysensor in the engine and chassis. From a/f to rpm to throttle position to calculated hp & tq. For tuning purposes of course, and to locate the occasional problem or two.

your better off getting your hands on an APEXi multichecker like i did. that unit displays a wealth of information like your saying. google it. converting to obd2 is just silly, i know you want to be able to do all that, but it would probabbly be just as much to just change over to standalone ecu. with standalone, however, you wouldnt have a computer that "corrects" your mods...

there is also the new blitz product the R-vit that will hook into the consult port. There are two versions one for obd2 and one for the consult port like the multichecker

New! The Blitz R-VIT is works with cars equipped with OBDII (>1996) or Nissan CONSULT (1989-96) diagnostic ports. The R-VIT plugs into the diagnostic port, allowing it to display a variety of information, including: tach, speed, water temp, ignition timing, injector duty cycle, airflow, throttle position, battery voltage, O2 sensors, and more.

Why? ... it works on the same concept, just a different plug, and different set of rules for the measurements.
