89 ka24e cali emissions egr question
My check engine light goes on and off, but has more recently been staying on for periods of about 10-20 minutes at a time.. according to the ecu flashes, it is the egr. What exactly does (or doesnt) a bad egr valve do or cause? can i clean it, plug it or just replace it? the vehicle is an 89 240 kae with cali emissions.

Definitely try cleaning it..... However, your not really hurting anything by not fixing it besides your emissions..... Youll probably not pass emissions with an EGR code and definitely wont pass if the EGR isnt working, but if your already good for emissions for a while, i wouldnt worry about it just yet... Menaing you dont have to try and bust butt to try and get it fixed because the car will run fine with the CEL on and it being the EGR.....
The EGR valve is a gold saucer with a single vaccum hose on it, next to it is a similar gold saucer with a vaccum line under it as well as 2 vaccum ports on top of it. The vaccum line on the bottom likely has burnt through and is leaking back pressure not allowing your EGR to work. That hose is a special heat tempered hose. Get the hose from the dealer and replace it.
