hey guys, this question really doesn't just apply to sr's but i really like the responses i get from this particular forum. I've been searching far and wide for a replacement ignition cylinder since my car was broken into and my ignition destroyed. Apparently they are on backorder from nissan with no date on when any new ones will be sent out.

this puts me in a very bad situation as i need to move my car before it gets towed. the only ignition cylinders i can find are for automatic cars. Can i use an auto ignition cylinder on a manual car? is there a significant difference in the wiring maybe? I really need to move the car in the next few days so if you guys could help it would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!

Are you talking about the cylinder that the key goes into and turns to start the car?

You can remover the steering column bezel, then you could remove the ignition cylinder by cutting two straight slots onto the bolts holding the cylinder on the steering column. Then use a flathead to unscrew the bolts. You might as well do this since you will have to do it to change the cylinder anyway.

Once it is off you can use a small phillips head and remove the ignition switch off the back of the cylinder and use a flathead or key to turn the switch. Turn it clockwise (not too far) and the car will start.

my main question is if an automatic ignition cylinder will work in place of a manual ignition cylinder without any complications. they have different part numbers...

They definately look different, their backs have different connections to the ignition switches.

well i just replaced my ignition cylinder with the automatic one. it's a perfect match.

so the answer to my question is that either a manual or an automatic ignition cylinder will work. The parts are interchangeable.
