89-90 tach signal different from 91+ ?

Hey... i just got doen with my E to DE swap... The dash harness from 89-90 doesnt match the 91+ engine harnes, so i rewired it, I have the tach signal wires hooked up correctly, and the tach still doesnt work but everything else does... Someone told me I need a new cluster because the 91+ uses a different tach signal ... Any truth to this ? seems very possibly. the tach worked fine with the previous motor in it.

cluster for about $40 bucks.

You are correct, the DOHC signal is different. I have personally not seen a 89 cluster work in a DE engine.
