Just a few days ago this started.

I'm not low on oil. Was running 5w40 Valvoline SynPower as recommended by other oil threads - been running on that for 6 months or so w/ no problems.

Will be changing oil this week to 10w30 Castrol GTX - maybe today if I can.

Anyway, it's a LOUD ticking/tapping noise. it is pretty low at idle & idles fine, then as I drive -> increase rpm -> increase tapping/ticking speed.

transmission: AutoEngine: internals all stock, mileage is ~130,000-160,000

From standing in front of the engine and moving around listening, it seems to be more from the injector side toward the back. But definitely on "top" of the engine.

I will be taking it to a mechanic soon to check it out, but any advice first will be awesome.

Thanks,Viet

Take off the valve cover, and look down inside the front cover where the timing chain runs. You see a chain guide on each side? I doubt it.

Instead you might see the chain resting against a piece of broken plastic on the diver's side. That is if it hasn't worn right through to the metal dowel that held the guide in plave originally.

Check the chain very closely for wear, you might need to replace it. It will be easy since you're going to have to replace whatever's left of the chain guides (on both sides) anyways.

Have fun!

That must have been it - it coincides w/ the symptons/possibilities from other threads.

I'll have to remove those timing chain tensioners/guides/whatnot one of these days, but not yet, haha.

Anyway, something must have been gunked or something affecting the oil pickup because I was full on oil and it was tapping. The odd thing was that sometimes when I turn off the car (after it taps) I check the oil level & it says "ZERO" - picks up no hint of oil. I start the car, check the oil, and it's chock full.

I decided that since I was due for an oil change anyway, I put in 10w30 for a slightly thicker mix opposed to my normal 5w40.

Problem went away... for tonight... go figure. As a side note, this started happening after I left the car on jack stands for 1 week fixing brakes. Hopefully that's all it was?

Do you think my oil pick up is bad? how do I replace that if it is?

THANKS

zerothread?id=61002

there is the link to the thread btw

oil pick up: it would lower oil pressure if it was clogged, doesnt really "go bad". check your pressure by hooking a gauge up in place of your oil pressure switch

well then yeah its the same sound but more quiet. I would really like to know what it is. It comes from the back 2 cylinders or the transmission. Maybe Lifters? I dunno. thanks though

yup the crank throws oil on the dipstick, if it read emty with the engine off it was probably just real low, so when the engine was running enough was tossed on he dipstick to look fine (the times that I have checked oil with engine running it read REALY high) also If im not mistaken 10w 30 is going to be thinner then the 5w 40 at opperating temperature, just thicker at startup
