89 240sx 241K miles, I've searched for a problem like this and I've come up with my own ideas. Lately when I have the A/C on I overheat when I'm idling, when I get up to speed or turn the A/C off the temp gauge goes back to normal. This doesn't happen when I don't have the A/C. In addition, I've noticed the compressor not cycling like it should but have ignored it as I'm still running R-12, and I still get cool air flow from the vents. I idle normal as I've replaced the MAF and AAC and cleaned out the throttle. I could use a coolant flush/fill, but since it appears an intermittent A/C problem, not sure what to do. From my search I checked the resistance on the fan clutch and there is resistance after warm up, although I suspect its bad. I'm not getting any coolant or oil mix and I'm on my third t-chain. I checked the SM and it wasn't much help it diagnosing something like this. Could use the help as I'm a poor grad student not a gearhead and want to DYI, any help would be appreciated!!

It could also be the AC fan. I believe if i remember correctly that the AC fan should be on under 40MPH if the AC is turned on.
