I own a '89 240sx and the other day I was driving home when the oil light came on and I made it about another 200 feet when I heard a rattle noise coming from the engine. It then stalled and it would not start again but it did turn over. I had it towed home but have not tried to start it yet, it's been 3 days. The guy who towed it said that a tensioner might have let go and it probably through the cam out.

Does anyone know what might have happened or have had the same issue. Should I try to start it?

Thanks for any help with this.

NO! Don't crank it at all. For one reason or another, your car doesn't have any oil pressure. This is a "Pull over as soon as safely possible" condition. Without oil, you can sieze an engine or spin a bearing. Check the oil level and/or look for any major leaks. If the level is fine, then probably either your pump is out or you've got some major blockage somewhere.

could that be a neglected timing chain guide (or lack thereof) that now the chain finally broke, causing a rattling as it went every which way to sunday behind the front cover.

my money is on the timing chain.

I have checked the oil and it is at the full mark. There are no oil leaks what so ever. I heard from the local Nissan Dealer that it's about a $1,500.00 to $2,000.00 job if it is the timing chain and guilds. I have not taken it in for an actual estimate as of yet.

im with ^, for 1500, do it yourself, i did it on my moms 240before she sold it, it too was an '89, and she never had ANY problems whatsover, and the car had about 200k on it, and that was the first and last problem, once we fixed it , ran like new

i would look at the chain. but it could be any number of things. like one time i saw a sentra 1.6 liter had a dent in the oil pan. turns out the dent in the oil pan was blocking the oil pickup screen.
