Just bought a 240 and I'm psyched. But it seems like the trans isn't catching right (70k miles on the trans). There's like a whining noise which I think is coming from the trans. I checked the transmission fluid and it's fine, could the trans be shot? What else could it be?

If it's an auto it's probably trans going bad. Mine started whining real loud then quit going anywhere. It's now in the shop getting 5spd. The only thing I can figure is it's a pump in the transmission whining or something. I dunno to much about the inside of transmissions though.

It is automatic at the moment, but I don't think there's a pump in the transmission. I was thinking maybe the torque converter, but if I'm going to take the transmission out, there's no way I'm putting another automatic trans on... So I guess I'll just live with it until I can get my hands on all the 5 speed conversion parts.

I just hope it doesnt leave me stranded. Did it get slowly worse and worse before it quit on you?

Mine quit after about 20 miles or less. I started driving to my buddies I noticed a loud noise sounded like a bearing going out. I stopped at the store bought a pop to get some change for the car wash. I turned it back on it was quiet. I washed it. Then took off it started making the noise again. Drove a few miles to my dad's to see if he could help me figure out what the noise was. It stopped making it because I turned the car off again. We decided to drive a few blocks to the corner store to see if it would start making noise again and then about 4 blocks later it gave out and wouldn't move. It never slipped or anything just stopped going. So I turned the car off and back on and it would drive again for 20-30 seconds and then stop having drive again. So I turned it off and on off and on enough to get it to dad's house. Then I parked it because it stopped wanting to move as much as it was. The whole time the car was running it made a terrible whining sound. I ended up just having it towed to the local tuner shop for a swap. They sourced all the parts etc. And it kept me from taking a bath in transmission fluid. I don't think they have an actual pump either in the transmission but my dad and my gf's dad both said something about a pump. I thought torque converter at first as well. But usually they only make the transmission start to slip when the fluid gets hot and thins out a bit. I am no transmission expert so I assumed it would cost less to have the tuner shop convert mine then to have a transmission shop rebuild my automatic. The swap doesn't look to hard but I didn't feel like trying to cut holes for pedals etc and I don't have a buddy that's free to come help me work on the car.

Your symptoms seem slightly different than mine. Mine has a constant not that loud whine (it might be louder than it sounds because I also have a hole in my exhaust)... The sound is there everytime the rpms rise (hot or cold), and it doesnt always catch... kind of seems like its not shifting up to the right gear half the time. I checked the transmission fluid and there's plenty. I'm just trying to confirm that its the transmission if that's what it is.

I took it to my mechanic the other day to get my inspection done. He told me that it sounded like either a wheel or transmission bearing. But it only makes the sound when I touch the gas pedal, when I let off the whine goes away. Does that mean its a transmission bearing?

I've had the same problem once before. my oil pump was goin out and was making this whinning noise and was slipping terribly. it got to the point were it was not moving anywhere. i dropped the transmission and the clutches were burned up and the pump was bad. to top it off the transmission bearing was chewed up. so i end up dumpin and puting in another one.

Wait, what did the oil pump have to do with your transmission slipping?
