Im thinking about buying a 89 240 from a guy i know. The only problems are it needs a new backend which i don't know what he is talking about and on the driver and passenger side is rust on the underbody. Is this 240 really worth buying or should I look around for another. The engine is a newer ka engine which only has 30k miles. help me out please.

I guess when he says "backend" what he means is "rear end", which is the rear differential which connects the driveshaft to the rear axle which in turn goes to the wheels.

This car may be worth it depending on how much rust it has. If you could get some pictures that would be great, but if it is really rusty then i would avoid it. a 30k ka is pretty sweet though.

thats what i was guessing what is wrong with it. how much does that usually run? there isn't much rust just a little on the body near the rear wheel well on both the passenger and driver side. The engine is a sweet deal and the body only has 170k miles on it. I think I might go with it just because its so hard to find a 240 anywhere out in Ohio. Ill also snag some pics so you could see it better.

Does he know that there is a problem with the rear end or is he just guessing that theres a problem with it?

You could probably find a stock replacement or a VLSD at a junk yard for $100-$200.

But if you plan on building up the car with an aftermarket LSD it could run you upwards $1000.

the guy told me straight up that the backend needs to be replaced. he is only asking 1500 for the car which is really low but thats how much he put into it. if i do get this 240 i plan on building it up maybe into a drift car but not very sure yet. what would you suggest. ka with a turbo or sr20?

don't ask about SR vs KA here. Search for your particlar solution. Each has it's own strengths and weaknesses.

^ word. Post up some pics when you get them so we can see how bad that rust is, but if it really isnt bad, and you plan on getting it fixed immediately, i would say that youre getting a very good deal.
