Hey Nico, I'm new to posting but not new to the forum. I recently bought an 89 240 coupe about a month ago. Went to the track yesterday to see what see will do and found the engine cuts out in third and fourth gear at 65mph but not fifth. When I mean cuts out , I mean I have to go back to neutral to get any sort of throttle response. The car is from California cuz it has all that emission crap like the EGR Temp sensor. Do cali ECU's have governors that prevent the driver from going more than freeway speeds in lower gears than fifth?

Automatic or 5 speed would be some good information to have. Stock motor? Any information that's relevant to your question is much appreciated.

Sorry about that. It's a 5-speed with stock motor and ECU.

Ehh weird, the engine trans are kinda dumb they dont share info. Check wiring make sure nothing is burnt or melted, give her a good ole tun up, timing, and make sure everything is good. Is it at 65mph or at a certain RPM for a long time? Could be in the ignition system.

In third it is 65 at around 5500 rpm and fourth is 65 at 4500rpm and same speed different gear but in fifth it goes past 65 without a problem. I'm gonna check the wiring again, had to replace a hold bunch of bad connectors and vacuum lins when I got the car. 5 minutes ago I turned the car on and saw the check engine light on and checked the code. The EGR Temp sensor and open circuit Speed sensor. I wonder is the speed sensor is the problem.

Something quick to try if you have a friend nearby with a 240 is swap ECU's.

I would love to try that, but unfortunately don't know anyone with 240's around. Tried to find some used Auto ECU's online but not sue where to look for used ones and craigs is useless. I do not like ebay but maybe thats where I'll have to go. Just wanted to know if anyone else had this problem to see what could be a fix for it.
