Hello all,

I just got a used 88' Pathfinder SE. After driving a while it starts to make a strange noise, and while making the noise the speedometer becomes shaky. Please watch the recording below. When idling, the noise goes away (and the needle stopped shaking). Please help. Thanks a lot.

Would that be due to the speedo cable? The noise is so loud though...

That was my first thought as well. The cable might be binding and flapping against something to make that noise. Temporarily, disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission to see if the noise goes away.

You should get get yourself a service and repair manual for that '88 while they are still available.

Thank you! I'll take a look and update later. (So, disconnect the cable and leave the screw hole on the transmission while driving won't harm the car right?)

It's been a long time since my old '91 Pathfinder was junked so I'm a bit foggy on the details of these WD21 models. When you disconnect the cable end from the rear of the transmission, you may likely start leaking when you drive. Secure the cable and plug the hole with duct tape. You won't harm the car but the tape won't last long. Just don't drive too long. Just long enough to know if the speedometer cable is shot.

It seems that I fixed the issue (for now). I didn't remove the pinion. I just unscrewed the cable. Then, I remove the instrument cluster and sprayed some graphite lube into the cable. So far so good.
I see people say that you should remove the "core" from the cable and apply grease to it. I am just lazy...we'll see.
Thank you.
