there are 2 posts on the starter one that is just a lug alone thats where the battery hooks up, the other lug has a braided wire coming off of it and leads to the side of the solenoid (I honestly don't recall the Z31 starter specifically but 90% of all starters are like this). The lug with nothing is where the battery positive connects. the ground cable from the battery connects first to the firewall then to a starter mounting bolt or any bellhousing bolt. It is possible however unlikely that the starter "went to ground" shorting the circuit and turning the cables into heater elements.It's also possible that if the starter, the engine or the trans were seized when you tried to start it the starter could not turn the engine over and burned up the wiring.
So had you just replaced the starter? you said you were going to fire it for the first time how about some back story?
