When I jumped in and started it this morning, it started right up. No cranking more than one turn and she was running and I was off.

But this afternoon, after it got a little hot, it would take 8-10 cranks to get it started, and on the trip home I stopped at the grocery store and it wouldn't start at all unless I gassed it and it sent out a huge black cloud and smelled of raw fuel and ran like crap, stuttering and stumbling on acceleration. It idled OK on the trip home, but now it won't idle at all.

The dist. cap looked kinda worn, so I replaced it and the rotor, no help there. The plugs look okay except for being covered in fuel, so what? FPR? Coolant temp sensor? Ignition coil?

What's the issue according to you? I would rather not throw more parts at the problem since taxes wiped me out recently.

I had this problem on my 86.5 not long ago. It would run fine, start fine, no troubles at all until the engine was hot and I turned the truck off. If I started the truck back up in a short amount of time, no issue, but if it sat for a few minutes or longer, it would not start unless I keep turning it over, or held the throttle down. Then, it would be flooded and smoke for a minute, idle like you said yours does, etc.

Here's the remedy and it an easy fix. The engine coolant temperature sensor has gone bad. It's located just under the thermostat housing and simple to replace. Unplug, thread out, thread new one in, reconnect and done! I would grab a can of MAF sensor cleaner to shoot a few squirts in the TBI port where it's connected and throw a seafoam treatment at it while your replacing that. Gets rid of that carbon build up and will freshen up the injectors some as well. Just follow the directions closely on the can if you've never used the stuff. Total cost will be ~$30 or so and she should run much better.

I forgot to get back to this one!

Yes, it was the coolant temp sensor. Imagine my chagrin when I had the part sitting in my dash, as well... It was supposed to be for my old B13 Sentra, and turned out to be the same exact part number for the truck.
Amazingly, I now have tripled or quadrupled my gas mileage! Now I have to deal with the fact that I am not burning oil like I thought, rather I have a leak somewhere because I cannot imagine having an oil burning issue with this good of a gas mileage. I must be getting 25 or 30 mpg?!?
