So as the title states, I need some help. I have an ignition issue. I need to know where the reference for the tach comes from on this vehicle. The car is missing and running very irratic, and is giving a false tach reading. It is almost as though it retards the timing all the way to TDC and randomly shutting down cylinders. I have to keep it to the floor just to keep it running. I want to know what feeds the tach so I can test that component, and narrow it to the dizzy, or the ignitor. I just don't want to spend alot of money on my back up car. Thanks for any help you may offer.

I seriously doubt the issue is with the tach signal. It sounds more like a dead air flow meter.

First step is to run the codes. Instructions for obtaining them are found in the various repair manuals (Haynes, Chiltons, factory)

Just out of curiousity, when was the last time you replaced the fuel and air filters, distributor cap, rotor, plugs, and wires? When was the last time you checked the plug wires to make sure they were all the way on?

The ECU cannot shut down certain cylinders on a whim. It sounds more like a tune up issue than anything.
