I recently bought my 2003 infiniti G35 coupe and woundering what octane should I put in the fuel tank? I mostly drive just in the city, my G is all stock! Is their any pro and cons to using lower grade octane in my G? I live in Missouri so our choice of octane is mostly 87 or 91 and right now 87 octane is 3.05 a gallon . I have a 2007 Suzuki GSXR 1000 and I have always put 91 octane in the tank. As recommended by the manufacture cuz this is a high performance engine. is it ok to use 87 in my G35??

You can get away with 87 on a modern car but you may see a slight drop in fuel economy. Also, there's no reason to buy a high-powered car if you're just going to neuter it with lower octane fuel. :)

I believe 91 is recommended by the manufacturer, but you can check in the manual in your glove compartment for the real answer...

This^. Your owners manual does indeed recommend premium fuel. I would strongly suggest following their recommendation regardless of the type of driving you do.

Double this ^^
The difference of cost in a fill up of 87 or 91 is between $2-$6 in most vehicles. Buy one less beer at the bar when you go out on the weekend to show off your fancy new ride. ;)

Lol how'd you know I drink beer.. lol. I'm just woundering if 87 would cause pre ignition ping or anything.

Never, well unless you can't find anything else. Regular unleaded in a 350Z? Same engine, same responses.

And then there's this offering at my local Shell station...

Because you'd have to be pretty drunk to consider it? :poke: Enjoy your G!

If manufacturer recommends it, do it. Otherwise you're likely gonna put a newer computer controlled engine in a limp mode.

This reminds me, I need to get my civic ecu flashed for premium fuel by Hondata.

Your ECU will detect knock and retard the timing. You'll experience lower fuel economy, hindered performance, and if your knock sensor isn't working, possible reduced engine longevity.

For what it's worth, lower octane has more energy.

But you will probably see reduced milage, because it will adjust your timing and such.

It might be cheaper. But if you care about your motor, it seems like a really bad idea. You also sometimes get special stuff (which may or may not work) like shell's nitrogen enriched stuff, when you buy premium. So basically like gas and injector cleaner in one package designed to work together.

They usually say you can use crap gas in an emergency, and to drive gently.

I typed up a long response about fuel economy vs gasoline grade in 350Z/370Z one day. Let me see if I can find it.

EDIT: Here it is.

Where's telcoman at? He could provide some insight on running lower octane with a VQ. He has a whole thread on running 87 in his G sedan. I think he's doing it with his new G. I run 89 in mine
