Whenever I go to start my 87 Nissan Pickup, sometimes it turns over and starts and other times it does nothing. Whenever it does nothing, I have to continue to turn the key off and then back on numerous times in an attempt to get the starter to turn over. Power is on (as reflected by all the indicators), but generally nothing happens when I turn the key. After a while, it will finally kick in and start the truck, but sometimes it never does. I don't know much about engines, starters and electrical components, so any help would be much appreciated.

when this happens again,if possible, have someone help you by turning the key and holding it in the start poition. If this is a manual trans there should be a blue relay mounted along the edge of the engine compartment. it is the only one with 2 different size plugs going to it. try tapping on it with a screw driver or something. If the truck starts when tapping on it replace the relay. If Its an automatic or tapping on the relay didnt work locate the starter on the passenger side of the engine block near the back at the bottom mounted to the trans bellhousing. when you find it and your help is holding it in the start position strike the starter with a large bar [ your spare tire lowering rod for example] if it starts you need a starter.
