Ive had the opportunity to pick up an 86 maxima dirt cheap (200) and all she needs is a waterpump, and it runs (i think)....

What I need to know is it pretty straight foreward... Just undo the belt, undo the bolts and put the new one in?? This is going to be a winter beater, and I found waterpumps for a maxima at advance for $30... I dont need anything fancy I just want this thing to run for a few months.....

Anything special I need to know....? Doesnt this car use a timing belt rather than a chain???

I need the lowdown.... Thanks!!!

yea its a t-belt car and the t-belt has to come off to gain access to the pump bolts.

So its a good time to replace the timing belt.....! IS there anything complicated with that, I have never worked on a FWD car or a car with a timing belt.....

It can be a bit of a pain since its a tight location. takes about 2 hrs with air tools. yea do the belt. but look at the cam seals real close to they may be leaking oil. pretty common on the VG series engines. especially the right bank.

Man I took a look at that today, holy crap tight is NO understatement......! I couldnt even tell where it is.... Could I have some more detailed instructions, Ive never really been under the hood of a VG FWD engine......

its the same as a RWD single cam VG. Except side ways. remove the hoses(coolant and vaccum) remove the drive belts, reposition the harness out of the way by releasing its retainer clips, then remove the A/C adjuster braket and the water pump pulley. Now remove the 8MM bolts holding the upper timing cover on(3 along the top of the cover 1 at either side about 4 in down, and 3 in the inside edge of the cover.) the one at the rear along the outer edge is a bear and in alot of cases gets omitted by even the best nissan guys, then pull the upper cover out.

You should already have the R/F tire off and the inner splash sheild so you can see the crank pulley. now you need to remove the crank pulley with a suitable puller. once off remove the 8MM bolts holding the lower timing cover on( 2 in the v area and 2 on either side along the edge). then pull the cover off.

At this point the entire T-belt should be exposed as well as all the water pump bolts. Take note of where the water pump bolt with the threaded head is, it has to be in that spot when going back together. If you have done a t-belt before I am sure you know how this ecentric Tensioner works and how to set the tension properly if not let me know and I will post how to set it.

Oh boy, this looks like a bit more than I was expecting.... Ive done waterpumps on SBC's and I could do it on my Q, but this looks like a bit much......

I appreciate your help NISTECH but Im not sure Im going to do this or not, it looks a bit more that I intend to want to mess with!
