I have an early production Hardbody with Z24I engine; it has been sitting a while and needs a smog this month. I gave it a tune-up (new plugs, wires, cap/rotor) and adjusted the ignition timing to 11deg BTDC. Sent a little carb cleaner down the intake while running to wash out any dust and/or deposits. It has an intermittent stumble now. This problem began just after finishing the tune-up and I had huge difficulty getting the engine running. Once I managed to get it running again (lots of cranking and pumping the pedal); I checked the ignition timing and it was at nearly zero advance. I adjusted the distributor to get it back to 11 deg; but now I have intermittent stumble while driving.

The exhaust smells bad while running smoothly at idle; so I'm sure it won't pass the smog check. I checked the ECU for codes and at first I got the following:

11 - Crank Angle Sensor
23 - Hard Idle Switch
24 - Neutral/Clutch Switch
32 - Start Signal
43 - Injector Malfunction

I re-set the codes and let the engine run at idle until warm. Then I re-checked the ECU and got the following codes:

11 - Crank Angle Sensor
23 - Hard Idle Switch
32 - Start Signal

Of these; I'm aware of the start signal problem. I have had to jumper the ignition system because there is a fault in the wiring between the ignition switch and the starter. Replacement of the ignition switch did not fix the problem nor did swapping the starter relay at the fuse panel. Are there any other relays or places to look for a broken wire in the starting circuit?

I'm going to try adjusting the throttle position sensor this afternoon hopeuflly that will correct the hard idle switch problem. Otherwise it looks like I'm in for replacing that part if it tests bad.

Any info on the crank angle sensor? Did it go kaput while doing the tune-up? It seems that it might have since the timing went way out; and this device allows the ECU to advance the timing appx 10 deg when it is operational. Is there a way to test the unit for proper operation or is it just a "replace and see" device?

Also; I'm using the code report that Chilton published for the "Z24I through 1986". Is that correct for my 86.5 MY or is there a different list of codes for the 1986.5-up? I want to be sure I am using the right code list so I don't replace the wrong components.

Thanks for any help...

OK; did some more work on it and I may have cleared up the crank angle sensor code (knock on wood). I also noticed that I had the advance incorrect at 10deg; it is supposed to be 5 deg.

I now have code 13 showing again; so I think I am going to replace the water temp sensor and then re-check for codes.

I've got a factory service manual for this truck if you're interested ($30 including shipping). Tons of info unlike the Chilton or Haynes manuals. Reply or email at [email protected]
