so i found a 4wd 85 hardbody. 4cyl 5spd. its got alot of surface rust, but seems to be in good condition. the guy wants 650 for it. i want to get it, but the motor wont idle. it will run and shift, but dies when you let off the pedal. im thinking the carb might have taken a ****, but not really sure. ive been a 240 guy since i was like 14 so i know my way around nissan fuel injection, just have no experience with carb'd motors. anyone got an idea what might cause the lack of idle??? thanks

edit. i know nothing about these trucks. and cant seem to find much info. if someone can point me in the right direction or tell me some things that would be great!

Take the air cleaner off then check the float level in the sight glass. Also make sure the electronic choke isn't sticking in the closed position by peering down into the venturi tubes of the carb. If there is a closed plate blocking on of the barrels and it doesn't flip open when the truck is warm then you will need to get that working again.

Just FYI - a 1985 truck is still the old 720 body style, not a hardbody.

If you can get the truck to idle, either by cranking up the idle screw, there's a few things you can do to check to see what the issue is - get a can of carb cleaner and start spraying around all the vacuum fittings (not directly into the carb). Listen for RPM changes when you do this. If you encounter big changes, you're finding vacuum leaks, and that's a leading cause of foul running carb'd motors.

Also, chances are it could use all the normal tuneup stuff...Cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc. if you can get it to run and it's not belching blue smoke indicating oil burning, that price probably isn't too bad for the truck if you just need a beater.
