1st post here.

I recently purchased an 85' 720 4x4 to use recreationally in the woods. The valves were clattering so I had my local mechanic adjust the valves. He made a remark that a couple of the valves were .008 out of adjustment. He also made the remark that they plugged a few vacuum lines that were missing.

After I picked the truck up, it would not idle without feathering the gas pedal. After some research, I decided to remove the emissions on the truck as we are not smog tested here in Louisiana. After removal of the vacuum lines, the truck will not idle at all, and is blowing bluish smoke out the exhaust (looks like it is getting too much fuel). My spark plugs are also black consistent with too much fuel. My mechanic said it sounds like my carb is dumping too much fuel and I should just buy a Weber and be done with it.

My question is: Could my timing be severely out of wack now after removal of the emissions?

OR, Should I just buy a Weber carb and be done with it?

Timing could be off, but that would be the cause of removing the vac advance line. Did you leave that one on? Is everything that needed to be capped off properly capped? Blue smoke tends to be a sign of oil consumption more than a fuel issue, so I'm wondering if something went wrong when you had it left with the mechanic. After all, it didn't run right after it left there, right?

Pezi,

I got the truck to idle good now, but only when its warm. When I start it cold, it puffs black smoke out of the exhaust like it is running rich and idles very rough. Once it warms up, it runs and idles fine with no smoke. Any ideas?

Mine did that as well. It didn't stop until I switched to the Weber carb, but it did cut back a lot on how bad it was once removing all of the vac lines. It's normal for a vehicle to run rich on start up, but the '85s seem to run even more so and I'm guessing it is related to the 6plug carb. I used to have to feather the pedal a lot with the stock carb to keep it running when it got cold... got used to left foot braking pretty quick.
