I have a 84 720 4x4 and I've got the motor out and i'm going to change some seals while I have it out. I was looking at the repair manual and it says that you have to have special tools to do the job like a rear main cap puller and some other tool. I have some questions:

1. Can you change the seal without haveing to get some special tool and if so how?

2. While I have it out i'm changeing the oil pump, front seal and gaskets and oil pan gasket because the engine came out of a 2wd truck and the oil pan is different. Is there anything that I should change out while i've got the motor out?

replaced the RMS on my 82 2wd Datsun when I did the clutch. I used a flat head screwdriver to carefully pull the old one out. Putting the new one in was a b****, but only because I was being stupid with it. I went through two before I finally made a tool to work that would push the RMS in evenly around the crankshaft.

When putting the new RMS in, it has to go in evenly. The socket I used to push the seal in wasnt big enough to push it all the way in while clearing the crankshaft, one side would go in first and while pushing the other side in it would crimp and bind. I found an old aluminum pipe and cut off a small portion, flared the end, ground it down, and tapped it in using the tool I made. It was easy after that, a tight fit, but easy once I had the right tool.
