i recently became the owner of a 1984 300zx, that sat for months, the first couple of weeks it ran fine, now it may have a hard time starting and will shut down and may instantly come alive again, sometimes not. does anyone have any ideas. thanks

Welcome to NICO!

I'm sorry to say I don't have much of an answer, I'd check all the electrical connections, including the batter cables, and the AFM, being in Nashville, if you can't track it down on your own, go to Crawford Z Car Service, they know Z's of all generations

When you have problems starting the starter does not turn at all? and is there low voltage when the car dies (meaning light go dim or go off)? If so check the ground wire that goes from Batt to chassis to trans, starter. On the Z31's this wire loves to go bad. If you have full voltage and the car cuts that is a different problem. Let me know and I can help you out.

hay I had almost the same problem.... but mine did not start at all. here are some places I looked at, fuel filter, fuel cap to see if maintaning presure, distubitor cap, ignition coil, vaccume lines, rotor, fuel relay, and then the ECU. well after going through all that and replacing half, i thought what could be the problem I've replaced every thing that it needs to run but no result than I had only one option the ecu.... well I went ahead and found an 86 ecu for cheap and took my old one out and swaped it. The car started right up after a few craks, but ever since then I have never had a problem. have fun and good luck on getting her to run.

lol,ECU= Engine Control Unitaka: computer, ECM (Engine Control Module)

it's located on the passanger side, I can't remember on the Z31, it's either under the panel under the carpet in the foot well or behind the kickpanle, i honesly just can't remember at the moment

LOL... it's near the passinger side, next to the door, under the glove compartment to the side remove the panel. you'll find out alot about the ZX once you start digging in to it. let me know when she's running agian.

thanks for your suggestions; i replaced the fule filter and that fixed the problem. Some of the gas that came out was very dark, the car did sit for several months prior to getting it; i guess there was junk in the gas tank that surfaced once it was driven again. thankyou barouk
