I just looked at this car and I'm thinking about buying it. But when I'm pressing full throttle it's barely there. assuming turbo leak or not spoiling. I'm getting it pretty cheap. If I were to do a full restore what's the typical value on these cars? It's the first one made for the 50th AE

Hey there,

Most of the time the Z's turn out to be cars that you LOVE, but after restore you either put in more than the car is worth or exactly what it is worth. I have seen some perfect ones go for 10k, but most don't. Then again, not sure if 50th AE makes it worth a lot more or not?

My Advice: Buy it, fix it, love it. The more you work on her the more you will love her. Buy for the love of the car, not the resale value.

Seriously, you have vin# 1?

Makes it interesting at least, but the collector market really hasn't recognized these cars yet. Only recently are the 1st gen cars starting to get a little bit of cred in that market.

I recently passed on a clean AE with 115k miles for $5500, there was one on ebay with 95k that closed at $8200.

Another with 12k original miles has been listed for $39k! The fact that it's an automatic hurts the value and desirability and the fact that the seller is on crack would suggest that one does not sell any time soon.

A clean low mileage original car is worth far more than a higher miles car that's had paint work, that rule applies to just about any car. A manual is worth more than an auto, in sports cars including the Z cars. As far as Z31's go there is far more interest in the ae's than later cars even though the SS had far lower production numbers and was a better car. The fact that nissan made so many copies of the AE does not help their value, nor does the fact that the Z31 was the best selling of all the z car platforms, the Z31 sold in the first 2 years as many copies as the Z32 sold in 6 or the 240Z sold in 3.

Generally it's cheaper to buy the best Z31 you can afford than to buy a project, but for most of us it's not about the money.
