83 pickup choke stuck open

I got a 83 pickup for 500 bucks cause something was wrong with the carb or so the guy i bought it from thought. I had a friend from work look at it and he said the choke is stuck wide open, cant even close it by pushing on it, but it usually starts up fine even in the cold only gives me a little bit of trouble when its below 20 degrees. I was wondering how i can fix it or how hard is it to make it a manual choke. I checked the linkage and it looked pretty clean and the guy i bought it from had just rebuilt the carb so i just shot it with some carb cleaner but still not working.

What engine do you have? Can you take a picture of the carb?

If you've got a Z24 engine, the carb should look something like this:

That page also discusses the choke mechanism. If the choke was reassembled incorrectly, or if the choke mechanism was damaged or modified, that could explain the behavior you're seeing.
