Just got a 82 Datsun king cab 4x4 got it from 2nd owner, an old man who parked it in his barn in 99. Truck supposedly ran good when parked. Got a few questions, what carb came on it in 82? Motor says Nissan z on valve cover, what motor is this? And HOW DO I POST PICS, I have a lot, thanks

Patrick, our resident 720 guru, will be popping in here in the next couple days. A preview of his assessment:

"I think he had a motor swapped into it at some point. Based on the stamped steel valve cover and the black air cleaner housing it should be a Z24 engine from a federal emissions 4x4 1983-84. Z22 is the motor it should have as it would have a cast aluminum valve cover and a light blue air cleaner housing. This will of course play into his attempt to ID the carb because they used very different carburetors. I will help him out once I get back home..."

Wow just from that preview assessment I know so much more, thank you. Just looking to get her back on the road, keep it stock and get all systems working as it will be helping out my 88 firebird with my 100 mile daily commute. I'm thinking I want to strip emissions systems, as in get rid of all those vacuum lines except distributor advance line and whatever else is vital. I rotated motor today just a few inches to make sure not locked up and she's free :) gonna pull carb soon as I get time and clean her out. Never messed with Asian carb but have experience with carter 2 bbl and quadrajets, do not too worried about this one. Where's a good place to pickup carb rebuild kit? And interested to see if my motor really was swapped, what numbers do y'all need? Is this the z24 or z22 engine? Which is better?

Hi there! So, based on what I saw in the pics, its a Z24. If it is, we need to see if the carb that got swapped on is from a Z24 or a Z22. To start, we want to look for any three digit castings on the intake manifold and cylinder head that say 10W. That would indicate Z24, then next we need a photo of the carburetor. If the baseplate of the carburetor is aluminum and not cast iron, and the head and intake are cast with the three digit code 10W, then everything we are working with is a Z24.

By the way: Nice find. I have a 1982 king cab 4x4, but I converted mine to run EFI. Also have an '83 running a Weber carb and a Z24 motor. Carb or EFI they run well. Not the fastest motors, but they have torque.

Ok so an update is got carb cleaned up, pulled all vacuum lines capped everything except distributor advance and brake booster. Can't seem to post a good pic but I added oil to engine and it came straight out through what looks like a freeze plug hole on the drivers side above ac compressor near distributor area, now is this an oil galley plug or a freeze plug?

That's a freeze plug. There shouldn't be oil coming out of that, because it doesn't keep oil in - the only thing circulating behind there is water.

With that being the case, somehow you're either putting the oil in the wrong hole (unlikely), or you have a cracked block which is allowing oil to interface with your coolant.

When I first added the oil, there was no drainplug so it came straight out of the bottom then once I go a drain plug in oil started coming out of the freeze plug hole. Its an open hole no plug actually there so oil justcomes pouring out. Before I go further how do I check for cracked block besides complete dissasembly?

Does anyone have an internal engine diagram so I could see possibly where and how oil is getting out thru that freeze plug hole

Found problem. Under valvecover in middle under camshaft in middle of word Nissan in head casting oil valley area metal piece blew out. Will try jb welding price back in. Was thinking Cooling system won't exceed 20 psi and camshaft oil valley area will have no pressure on it. Jb weld should hold. I just wonder how that piece of metal blew out

I'm not so certain that's going to do it.

Even if it does, it's compromised with oil saturated into the metal. With hot oil on one side and hot coolant on the other, I don't see it lasting.

The correct engine for the truck should be easy and cheap to find... although, if it were mine, I'd throw a KA in it and drive it 300k. :)

Yea I thought about pressurized coolant on one side and oil on the other. Gonna degrease best I can and really put that jb weld to the test. Just watched a video of a guy making a cylinder head out of jb weld for his lawnmower and it held up, another guy made a piston out of it and it held up. worst case it doesn't hold best case it does lol. Is the head cast iron or steel? Maybe just could weld it.
