I'm thinking of buying a non-turbo '81 280ZX. The body and engine are in decent shape, interior needs some help (a lot of help), and the transmission slips in reverse.
I'm thinking of doing the transmission rebuild myself on the ubiquitous workhorse, the Jatco 3N71B. Removal/installation seems to be fairly straightforward on the 280ZX, and this is a simple A/T, so I think this would be a good transmission to cut my teeth on. And...if I zig when I should have zagged, well, I'll tear it out and try it again.
Has anyone done a DIY overhaul on the 3N71B? If so, any insight, suggestions, warnings, writing-on-the-wall, etc?
Has anyone swapped out a 3N71B for the 4N71B (4 sp/OD)?? That may be an option too...rebuild the 4N71B while driving the stuffing out of the 3SP. Anyway...I digress...
I would probably buy a standard master kit from the local transmission supply unless someone can tell me if there is a specific kit that should be used (better materials, high performance, doesn't suck). Rockauto.com has one for $109. -- ATP Part # NM1 {Contains Friction and Steel Clutch Plates, Gaskets, Seals, O'Rings and Sealing Rings}.
Any input would be appreciated if you have some experience with this transmission. Thanks!
