Hello!

I recently bought my first car: a 1979 Datsun Cherry N10 (Datsun 310).

It's really rare here in Hungary, and I couldn't manage to find a lot of info about the car online, so the best way is to get help from the forum. :)
My first concern: The car has a 4 speed manual, and it whines. I don't know if it should and I hope somebody knows the right answer.

Thank you, and sorry for any mistakes in my grammar :)

See if it whines always, or just while you push in the clutch pedal or just when it's not pushed in. Let us know. Could just be a need for a new throw-out bearing...

Well it whines whenever the car is moving so it may be the front differential. At lower gears the whine is louder, while in 4th it is more silent.
Maybe the gears in the diff are worn?

I don't think gears whine so much. I think bearings do. Okay, I still need to know if you can hear the whine while the clutch is pushed in or not. Does the whine go away when you push in the clutch pedal and it is there when the clutch pedal is not pushed in? Also, since it whines in all gears, does it whine in neutral? I mean neutral and parked and I also mean neutral and coasting at speed (maybe down a hill or as you approach a stop).

Basically, we're trying to see if the whining comes from the clutch or the transmission. So try to make sounds that one would and the other wouldn't by either being in gear or out, moving or parked, etc.

When standing still in neutral, and when coasting in neutral it doesn't make a sound. When I let off the gas and when I push the clutch in it doesn't whine. The sound is exactly the same as a gearbox with straight cut gears.

Okay, I think you're tranny is fine and you need a new clutch kit installed. Mostly the throw out bearing is going bad. So, get a kit with the clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing. Install it or have it installed.

Allright I'll try it out, but there is no whine when standing still or coasting in neutral, even when the clutch is not pressed in.
But I have no idea what could do that sound, so you must be right. Thank you for the help! :)
