My 280z had an exhaust leak coming from the pipe to manifold. It was making loud popping noises, so i took it apart and the gasket was pretty much gone.I cleaned up the surfaces and got a new gasket for it and put it back together. Now the popping is gone but it's leaking a lot more then it was.Do i need to use anything else with the gasket? or did i not clean it well enough? Or is there something else I'm missing?Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

hey it sounds like either you didnt clean the surface good enough before you put it back together. Or you didnt get the pipe and the manifold lined up correctly before you tightened the bolts down. There isnt really anything you can put on the surface of the gasket, you might want to try some copper spray gasket that might help but thats about all i know that you can put on there.

where si the leak occouring at? a lot of times the head surface near the #1 exhaust port will get corroded fomr years of coolant leaking down on it, I had to have a head side surfaced to get a good seal on my #1, you can also try cooper gasket spray ont he gasket before instalation or head shelac

OK, so I have taken it apart, cleaned it up more so, and put the gasket on with the copper spray.I am not seeing anything leaking out, but the popping sound is back.So when i give it gas and then let off the gas all the way, about 1/2 the time, it makes a poping noise out the back tailpipe.I don't see anything coming out in the engine compartment though. Could there still be a small leak in it? Or could something else be causing this

sounds to me like the popping could be comming as a result of not enough back preasure. The likely cause is probabbly a worn out muffler, although impropper ignition timming or the car just running to rich could be the culprit as well. I think i would start with checking your timming maybe possibly looking into getting a new muffler

you have a popping out the exaust and thought you had an exhaust manifold leak?OK so back to square1, you have a 280Z (what year?), with stock fuel injection? and you have a popping noise out the exhaust at idle? kinda sounds liek a valve seat siiue

OK, so at the start.

There was a popping noise. At the connection from pipe to manifold, everytime it would pop, i would see a little ploom of smoke come out from that connection.I took it apart, and the gasket was pretty much gone (down to just about the 2 rings)So put in a new gasket with copper spray, and i'm not seeing anything comeing out of that connection. But now, when it pops, it sends a small ploom of smoke out the back of the tail pipe. Also i don't really think its smoke, as its cold outside and it goes away after the car warms up.the 280z is a 1978 with stock fuel injection.I hear the popping noise when:I give it some gas, and then left off all the way. When the rpms drop to idle speed, it sends a pop out, but it doesn't happen everytime, only about half the time.Ill be checking the timing over the next day or two.

hmmm...could be a small backfire in the exhaust, wihc means you either have unburnt fuel in the exhaust of you have a valve not closing all the way, I'd try adding a couple of degrees of advance and see if it helps, if not I'd do a leakdown test
