75a fuse problem. i was getting my alt tested and when i put it back in, i found out that the 75a fuse blew so what i did was just put a paper clip in it.. it lasted a couple of months but just today it started getting very very hot and smoking.. there is defiantly a short somewhere.. Where could it be? i know damn well if i just put another bus fuse its just gonna blow so i dont wanna waste my money on that.. ive looked in other threads but nobody is having the problem like that. please help.. im sure alot of people know what the car does when that fuse is blown.. goes crazy! ahah please help!

I actually have the same problem.. i agree.. dont spend money on another fuse.. i went to the dealer and they cost $25 a pop.. for a fuse, thats pretty expensive, and plus, the minute u put it in, it might blow again...

When i first got my car, the fuse was already blown.. it couldve been a short, or it couldve been the previous owner jumping the car the wrong way... anyways.. i didnt wanna spend money on another fuse.. so i just customed two female connectors and a wire that is alil thick to somewhat match the amp of 75.. so far i have no problem with it.. Try that... n see if that burns.. cuz it might not be a short..

Can I see pictures of the Fire? That is stupid for a long term fix- something is wrong, and needs to be fixed. Fuses. and breakers are designed into a system for a reason PROTECTION! I suggest you start chasing every circuit until you find the damaged wire/component that is shorting your system.

There will be a fire eventually- probably when doing 70 down the freeway- at least start carrying a fire extinguisher if nothing else.

all i did was go to walmart and buy some battery acid cleaner and sprayed it on the connectors and all the little clips, including the alternator and starter bolts (with the battery disconnected). let it sit for about 5 or 10 mins then sprayed it off with a water hose. let all the water dry for about 2 or 3 hours and hooked the battery back up and its back to normal.. its not getting hot anymore and all my electrical is working fine. i even managed to connect my voltage meter gauge up so i know my voltage now. at idle its about 14 volts which is about right!

if everything is ok, then that fuse wouldnt be breaking. check all the alternator wiring. could be something as little as some exposed wiring.

id fix it asap. like everyone said, it could lead to a fire, or leave you stranded or without a car at an inconvenient time.

Honestly, take the time and unwrap the wiring group going to your alt. I had hte same problem and it was a simple fix of taking the five minutes to unwrap, find the break, wrap with electrical tape and you saved yourself a assload of trouble. Like being on the side of the road at 6am, 45 miles from home.

Paperclips instead of fuses I learned that the hard way...here's a pic.

Third degree burns and it burned about halfway through each finger...that was when I stuck the paperclip in (stupid I know, I learned my lesson) Then I couldn't let go and that's pretty much what happened...moral of the story? Always use fuses.

you're running 75amps through a paper clip... think about it.

You can use a multimeter on the fuse w/ the car on & off (good to check in off too, in case you have some weird short/mis-wiring somewhere) to see how much power/load you are drawing. Make sure you are w/in spec voltages.

But really, replace the paper clip w/ a fuse first.

like i said in the last post.. its not getting hot anymore and smoking like it was. im not using a paper clip anymore and when i get the cash i will get a fuse cuz im pretty certain its not gonna blow anytime soon.. like i said before, i sprayed battery acid cleaner in all the connecters and cleaned it all and no problems!!! its good as of right now lol
