okay so I am planning on getting a 73' 240z 4speed manual and rebuilding the bottom end. I am not sure about the top end though? What I mean is what are my options for the top end? Like about the carbs, I read on here that the 71'-72' carbs are the better choice over the 73' or are there other setups I could choose from like a different head or something. I mostly want to keep it stock, just want a durable setup. I do not plan on boosting or gaining huge power.

Also what are the characteristics of the E31 head, is it turbo or NA.

thanks

p90 and p90a are the turbo heads, all the rest are n/a, but you can still swap amoung them, the e31 has the smallest combustion chamber yielding the highest compression ratio, it also along with the e88 has the smallest valves, the 70-71 are the most desirable "4 screw round top" carbs, if you want a real improvement look for a set of tripple webber dcoe's or equivellant, if you're building the bottom end it's a good idea to locate a flat top f54 l28 block, you get the extra displacement and the flat top pistons to keep the comp[ression ratio up for an n/a motor, these came in 81-83 280zx n/a's, and the popular combo is to use the n42 head, you keep a small combustion chamber but gain larger valves without any of the sleaved exhasut runners found in the n47 and p79

here si a calculator to allow you to see what combo's yield what compression ratioshttp://forums.hybridz.org/atta...48817

these would be fat for the 2.4 but good for the 2.8 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...&rd=1

that was some good information there being able to see the different combinations. From what I was able to mess around with it seemed like the L24 with the E31 head had a decent compression while still in its stock form. So I will probably stay with the L24 and just try to improve on that platform. Unless I get a good deal on another engine.

those tripple webber dcoe's look really nice and I heard they sound real nice when tuned properly, but I am barely getting into carbed engines and I do not think I have the knowledge or the money to maintain that setup. So I figured the L24 would be a good place to start and learn from. Maybe later once I understand better I will be able to up move into that stage.

webers make a world of a difference, mikunis are nice also, but if u dont have the $$ then look for the round top 72 or prior setup, its much much better
