Its not as easy as that to polish the crank with emery paper. I've tried to and almost did more damage than could be repaired by machine grinding. You can't use your hand because of its unevenness and you have to know how many turns of string to put over the emery to be able to cover the entire lobe. Be very careful when attempting the polishing.
