I live in a state which still requires vehicles *newer* than 1967 to pass emissions. I don't have a problem with my 240Z and 260Z as all they have to pass is the idle test.

The 1983 720 pickup has to pass both idle and loaded however.

It's getting harder to pass and this year, I discovered that the high altitude compensator wasn't working any longer. I had replaced every single vacuum hose and it still didn't pass the loaded test so I took it to a local mechanic. He was able to squeeze it through but said the HAC and one of the vacuum solenoids was bad.

Needless to say, the local Nissan dealer was no help in finding the parts.

Since I plan to keep this pickup another 20 years, I need to figure out something for future years.

So the question is where to find the parts? I'll try the salvage yards but since most of the parts will be of the same age, getting a good one is iffy. I suppose the other alternative would be to build up the carb setup like a federal model without the HAC. I have the factory service manual and will look at that option.

How have others dealt with the passing emissions problems when needed parts are unavailable?

Thanks!

Heck, I would be willing to pay you for the parts and pay shipping. :-)

I'll take anything you took off for spares! The HAC is that square thing on the right side fender with four vacuum hoses. I'm not sure yet which solenoid he said was bad. My wife has the pickup now or I would take some pictures. I can do that tomorrow.

I've bought odd bits for years for my Z cars when I saw them and the wife jokes that I could probably build another one from all of the collected bits. I especially collect emission parts because of our stupid emissions rules.

My zip is 85714 if you want to figure shipping.

:wtf2: Arizona requires emissions on 43 year old cars?!? I knew California was strict, but I had no idea about Arizona.

Any chance you need to replace the cat?

Yes, Arizona is that strict. If you live in the Phoenix or Tucson metropolitan areas, you must pass emissions for any car newer than 1967! For 1967 to 1974, it is just an idle test but for anything newer, it includes the loaded test as well. Thats using the tailpipe sniff method. For very new cars, they just plug into the computer and read it directly.

That's why I can easily get my Z cars and XK-E through because the idle test is trivial. The pickup on the other hand is too "new" and has to pass loaded as well.

I actually have an old Sun emissions analyser and just set the carbs very lean on it for the old cars, take them through, then bring them home and adjust so they run again. I know it's cheating but if I leave them lean enough to pass, I risk burning a piston.

No, the cat was replaced last year on the 720. As I said, the mechanic was able to get it to pass both tests but he had to do something to rig it. He said it probably won't be able to be made to pass next year unless I can find the parts I need. I also need to think about an engine rebuild as the 720 now has 250,000 miles on it and is starting to burn oil. I just went through the suspension and replaced ball joints, tie rods, bushings, etc.

Nissan engines are incredibly strong! I just rebuilt the L24 in my 1973 240Z after 400,000 miles and the machine shop debated whether it needed to be bored out to 20 thou oversize or not. We finally just decided to go ahead and do it to avoid any issues if we erred on the sloppy side.

Here's a picture of the emission parts I want for my 1983 Nissan 720 2WD pickup:

If anyone has taken them off of a 1980 through 1986 pickup and they look similar, I would be more than happy to pay for them and pay for shipping.

The thing with the four hoses on the right is the high altitude compensator. I'm not sure what the vacuum relay on the left does and there are two smaller ones buried a little lower in the photo.

I'll take anything anyone has as spares as I intend to keep the pickup for a few more years and need to be able to pass emissions next year.

Thanks!

Are you in Phoenix?

Ecology 27th ave has a 720 4x4 in there last week.

I think the high altitude was on California emissions only.

Actually according to the official Nissan service manual, there were at least four emission versions. The California model, the Federal model, the High altitude model, and the Canadian model. The High altitude model is just the Federal model for higher altitudes.

I'm in Tucson so I will check the salvage yards here but the pickings are slim for any vehicles older than 20 years.
