Hey everyone! I am new here but not new to car forums so let me first say...I did search! LOL I know that is the pet peeve of all vets...the newbs posting and double posting on dumb stuff! So..to the point! I...well my uncle has a 72 240...pretty much bone stock, all original and he is the only owner of the car. He called me and said he was having an ignition problem. Basically the car has the 3 or 4 position key lock (not sure what its called). Lock, power on, ignition, and running position...I would assume. He says after he turns the car off and into the lock position the car starts up again! Any clue of what the problem may be? I said..and its a theory only, that maybe since it is the original wiring, maybe the two ignition wires are bare somewhere and when he turns the key...they are touching. Thus...basically hotwiring the car back to a start. Is this possible or is there a different issue we should look into? ANY help would be great and the sooner the better! Thanks guys in advane, and I look forward to seeing what this site has to offer!

I had the same problem with my 83 turbo when i hooked up a turbo timer. Basically the "Lock" position is 180 degres from the "On" position and the ignition switch is bad so when you turn the car to the "Lock" position it can't tell the difference between lock and on.

could be a bad ignition switch, or s tuck relay, I don't suppose he did an internal regulated alternator swap recently? and the external regulator can cause this problem as well
