I did some search, but didn't really find what I am looking for. I was wondering if it would be worth doing a 6 speed swap in my 240sx HB, or if I should just keep the stock 5 speed? theoretically shouldn't I get more speed and power?

So far right now it's stock but I plan to go turbo in the near future. as well as a lot of other upgrades.

Search harder?

This was less than 10 post down from yours. To reiterate, search (current and archived), browse, and if all else fails then post. zerothread/223716

How does a transmission provide more power?

6 speed FTL.

A transmission can provide more power if it's not broken I guess.

Well, in his defence, it isn't really the same thing as the other thread on transmissions. The other dude was asking if the 6 or 5 speed was better for drifting. Now, you better not ask about drifting!

To restate, if you are going for high power, it is probably better to keep the 5. I guess if you wanted better highway fuel economy (which it doesnt seem like you are too worried about) go with the 6

A transmission cannot provide power. It is not a power adder. If he means handle more power then maybe. But the 6 speed transmission is not bad. It's just not good.

Yeah, that is what I meant. He was talking about adding turbo and a whole bunch of mods. I didnt mean getting higher power from the transmission, i just meant being able to take more power. UNLESS, he is gonna get one of those transmissions with the mice that run on the gears and help them spin faster. In that case, the 6 speed is definately the choice because it is a solid 1 mousepower more powerful than the lowly 5 speed.

The only advantage of a 6-speed over a 5-speed is that there's less of an RPM drop between shifts. This keeps the power level up as you're accelerating through the gears.

If you're getting the 6-speed from an SR motor, the transmission will not bolt up to a KA block.

well then, if I want top speed in the end, would I just be better off changing the gearing to give me that? cause I don't see how just adding a turbo and whatnot will alone make it faster cause a red-line is a red-line you see what I'm saying. those hears can only spin as fast as 6000 RPM will let them, you know.

Redline has nothing to do with gearing. How high you can rev the engine is dependent on the abilities of the head. As regards top speed, why fork out the extra money for the 6 speed and shipping when you can just change the gearing of the 5 speed?

If you want higher top end speed, change the differential gears to a lower numerical ratio. Changing trannies is going to do nothing for you.
