Ugh.

Hi all, I'm the new guy here. Kinda pissed that my first post has to be about this. I bought an 08 G37s coupe from the local Infiniti dealer last week, and as part of the deal they were going to bring it back in on Monday to buff out a couple scratches.

Well, after driving some this weekend, I noticed that I was getting some slight grinding going into 5th gear. (6MT, as stated above). I noticed this on the test drive before buying, but thought it was just me getting used to the clutch on a new (new to me) car -- and it wasn't very severe at all. 5th gear still worked fine after I got it into gear -- just a slight hiccup getting it there.

So I dropped it off yesterday, and I told the service guy what I was noticing with 5th gear and some slight grinding. He said they'd look at it. I got a call this morning, and he said they was definitely an issue with it and that they were ordering me a new transmission to replace mine with. :wtf2: I specifically asked if it was a rebuild or a new one, and he emphasized that it was new.

This is still under the standard warranty, and I bought up the extended warranty to 7 years/100k bumper-to-bumper. So this won't cost me anything out of pocket. On one hand, getting a brand new transmission installed by the dealer is cool. On the other hand, It's just not exactly filling me with warm fuzzies to know that this is happened at 23k, and that they sold a used car in this condition without addressing it first.

Any thoughts on what my next move should be?

Drive it!! It's bad they missed it....but it's good they are making it right. My wife's 07 Passat had a brand new transmission put it (automatic) under warranty and it's been perfect. You have plenty of warranty left and about to have a brand new transmission. You are golden! Have fun...enjoy the car! :-)

Try to find out who the previous owner was.
I wonder if it was someone unable to drive a stick & got rid of it?

If the transmission is coming out perhaps there should be a close inspection of the clutch?
I still have my original transmission & clutch. Been driving sticks for over 40 years

I saw the carfax and it was owned for 10 months in NY, then auctioned in MD. So it was likely a repo. I'm guessing that like you said, it was someone driving a stick who shouldn't have been / didn't know what they were doing. I'd be a lot more concerned with other unseen damamge if I didn't have this warranty.

Consider this work welcome. You don't know how this car was driven, at least now you will have a brand new transmission at no cost. Since they are taking everything apart (and as someone already mentioned), would it make sense to check out the clutch and change if needed at the same time?

I called today and said that even thought the clutch was a wear and tear item (IE, not covered by warranty) -- that I had concerns that a dogged transmission would have cause premature clutch wear. They should be tearing it apart tomorrow or friday and he said he'd let me know.

Even if you had to pay for just the parts there should be minimal labor cost to replace the clutch.
I'd do it even if they say the original clutch is good.

Got the car back tonight. The difference in price for an installed clutch now vs "from fully assembled" was only about $250, and they said it looked fine. I decided to stick with this one, I'll just suck up the replacement if need be when the time comes. Hopefully it won't.

Went out for about an hour on the highway tonight after getting it back. Happy times. :shifter:

Well this is my very first message on a forum so here we go
Good luck with the car hopefully everything is going great with it. I agree with the other people the previous owner may have messed it up shifting incorrectly. Enjoy the car I know I do every time I drive it.

I had my 6MT replaced on my 2005 coupe with under 20k miles. They still use the same manual transmission...

This is part of the reason why I went with the new AUTO ;)

same 6MT but they have different revisions....the CD009 has much better syncros. You should be fine with the new transmission and if you ever have any issues, you don't have to worry. Thats the great thing about the extended warranty.

Sit back and enjoy the new car!

I'm here to help :yesnod

They had several revisions through the years - upgrading synchros - the CD009 is supposed to have more synchros between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears improving longevity but also smoothness.

wow. thats the same thing with my 2008 cpo g37s (23k) i jus got dec. after a two weeks my clutch pedal was stuck to the ground and advisor told me it was the clevis pin after 2 pit stops. within the next 2 weeks there has been a distinct clutch burning smell and they couldnt figure it out until i mentioned the reservoir was black as someone pointed out in the forum to flush. then behold, infiniti tech advised the dealer to replace clutch and slave cylinder. its been 3 days and trans is smooth and waiting till i get to 500 miles to test it out; however, 5th gear seems to be hard to get into at times :tisk: hope its just the breakin period.
