So about 2 weeks ago, I had a transmission/diff oil change. After that it got really cold outside, and since then I noticed some whining noise coming from the transmission.

This noise only happens in the morning when the car has completely cooled down over night. After the car reaches speed ~30 mph, the noise starts. The sound is very distinct and difficult to describe. At first I thought it was "wind noise" as if my window was slightly opened. After about 5 mins of driving the car warms up enough and the noise goes away.

This is my first winter in the car so I don't know if the car was making this noise before the transmission oil change, since I didn't get to drive it in such cold weather.

Anybody else experience a similar problem? I am wondering if this has anything to do with the service performed on my car, or if this is normal. Should I take my car in and have them check it out? My car still has powertrain warranty so would they charge me to examine the problem?

Thanks in advance!

Hmmm... Who did the fluid changes? The dealer or someone else?

It could be a throwout bearing?

Not sure...but I would take it to another dealer to have them listen to it...maybe your friend didn't add a needed additive?

Don't take this the wrong way but why were the fluid changes done?

I am of a strong belief that if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it.

I've gone hundreds of thousands of miles with a long list of vehicles over the past 40 years without ever changing transmission fluid or differential fluid. I strongly believe that as far as a manual transmission is concerned, the time to change the fluid is perhaps when you replace the clutch after a 100k to 200k miles? As for the differential fluid, I'm never changing mine. I don't give a crap what the owners manual says!BTW, I'm an old farht that loves my G

Just my opinion

telcoman,

I asked on this board how often should it be changed, and people said every 30k miles. I just wanted to do the "proper" maintenance. I figured something as simple as fluid change can't hurt the car.

I've driven my last manual trans nissan for 200k miles with a single trans fluid change at 100k miles, and had the car not rusted away, I'd still be driving it.

I didn't want my Infiniti tech telling me: "Your car isn't covered by warranty because you failed to do minimum recommended maintenance."

Joe,

The guy that changed my fluid has done it 100 times on other nissans, and 350z's which probably have the exact same procedure. I find it unlikely that he missed something, though it's always possible.

It will be very difficult to get to a dealership to have my problem examined. By the time I get there, the noise will surely go away because the trans will be sufficiently warmed up. Unless I leave the car with them over night.

Thanks everyone for their input.

Well your experience coinsides with mine. Changing transmission or differential fluid every 30k miles as recomended is IMHO a bunch of BS

The dealer is in business to make money. Frequent oil & filter changes are another issue. I change mine myself every 3k miles and have been doing so for 40 years. I read the owners manual but there are some things in there that are more of a benefit to the dealer $$$ than to the owner. There are some that tend to in my opinion abuse their vehicles & if you f/u a manual transmission the fact that there was no proof of transmission fluid changes could give the dealer an out for not covering under warranty.I can't recall my tach ever exceeding 4500 or 5k rpm so I'm not too worried about fluid changes. If my clutch ever needs replacement I'll think about it.
