hello everyone, first off i just wanna say i love this site and really enjoy everyones input to this forum. It has really helped me in the past 2 years of owning my versa, which is my very first car that have i owned!!!

So i tried the search engine and couldn't find any answers to my question. if someone knows of a similar post feel free to point me to it.

THE LOWDOWN:
I was driving home from work today and while on the highway i was behind a car going 65 in a 75. i attempted to pass the car which was in the slow lane. I was going about 65 as well and rev match (manual trans btw) to 4000-4500ish to drop from 6th gear into 4th gear. Well apparently instead of dropping into 4th gear i went into 2nd. When i released the clutch my versa immediately slowed from 65 to 50 i immediately began to press the clutch back in and glanced at the rpms, it was at 7500. I put the transmission back into 6th and needless to say felt like a complete dork for brake checking the car behind me let alone doing this to my car. When i was dropping the gears i did not feel any resistance, it felt as if i was going into 4th gear as i planned. I couldn't hear much while i was in 2nd because i had the music turned up a bit. I did hear the sound of my short ram stop but just as if i let off of the gas. As i was still on my way home i was curious to why the transmission let me put the gear into 2nd while going at such a high rate of speed. So while i was going 70 i attempted to drop the gears down (never letting the clutch out) from 6th all the way down to 2nd. 1st wouldn't let me put it in gear. I'm just worried because my power train warranty expires in 4,000 miles and this is my first stick shift car.

Question #1 shouldn't the transmission not allow me to put it into gear if the speed is too high for it???

Question #2 could what i have done caused any damage to my transmission or engine. I'm more worried about the transmission. I'm sure if there was any damage to the engine i would hear it, like the rod ticking or something. on the rest of the drive home everything seemed normal and when i got home didnt hear anything odd when i looked under the hood. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLYS!!!

I think that you will be fine since you don`t make this an everyday occurrence. I`m pretty sure everyone who has had a manual trans car did this at some time in their life...
My 6spd. in the Altima will allow the same thing.
not like my old hurst 4spd shifter days when you knew what gear or the shifter actually gated correctly.
I also find that it is all to easy to downshift into the wrong gear as the shift mechanism springs to the left when coming into or passing neutral...seems I have to pay more attention when downshifting...

you basically engine braked very hard, all of the drive components absorbed the shock, axles, tires, CV`s etc... I don`t think I`d worry about it since you are now conscience of what happens...

80km/h+1st gear=little bits of clutch
Was enthusiastically aiming for 3rd but...
My 87 Tempo was a tough car but it did have limits! Engine and transmission were apparently unharmed.
So to answer question, yes you can force a car into a poor gear choice :chuckle:
Yesterday after i passed a slow car in 5th, i hit 4th instead of 6th in my V. Ya been there! No prob.
Occasionally i will enter traffic from a stop and make 85km/h in 2nd in V.
Did this in ol sentra too. No prob.
So IMO, i would not be concerned about engine or transmission, but rather the clutch and/or motor mounts, which are weaker and much cheaper. :bigthumb:
