I am currently working on my engine build plan to begin this spring. I've sourced a JDM VG30DETT motor and transmission and the plan is to rebuild it, source a car and swap in the rebuilt motor. Until recently I had a 2003 WRX with about 425HP that was my daily driver. I have since sold that car and I am now looking forward to building out a weekend track car. The 300ZX has always been a dream car for me, since it was _the_ car to drool over when I was in high school. From all the research I've done over the past six months, it would seem that a 600HP motor is a modest goal for this motor. The one thing I haven't been able to find anywhere I've searched is a rough blueprint for this goal, which brings me to this forum post.

I am looking for advice/suggestions/knowledge transfer for building out this motor. So far my parts list includes the following:

AMS 850CC injectors & AMS fuel rails
Garrett GT2560R (GT28R) turbo system from Concept Z Performance
Megan Racing Divorced downpipes
Borla Exhaust
AEM Series 2 EMS

With regards to the motor itself, what supporting mods should I absolutely do in order for the internals support a 600HP goal? (un)Forunately, the WRX motor supported its horsepower goals without having to touch the internals, so I am now in unfamiliar circumstances.

Any suggestions for whether to stick with the divorced intercoolers or if getting a FMIC to fit is workable in the chassis would be welcome as well.

Any experienced 300ZX enthusiasts with knowledge they wish to impart, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you're going to be rebuilding it anyway, I would go ahead and get the block cleaned up by a machine shop and swap to wiseco pistons, if you wanna bore it out there's your chance. Stock rods will hold pretty much as much power as you can throw at em as they are forged, though pretty much any upgraded rod will reduce the weight. The SMIC's are plenty for whatever power though I'd probably go for 2.5" IC piping and the ashspec massives (intercoolers). If you really want it that bad you can switch to a FMIC, I personally wouldn't. You'll need to upgrade clutch and pressure plate to hold the power and I'd go ahead and get a upgraded flywheel too. Any head work you do will help out alot with the flow through the motor. My natural asperated VG is getting the ferrera 1mm oversized valves right now. The "While you have the engine apart you may as well..." adds up but if you do all the internals as much as you can while it's apart, it'll save you from wishing it was done later. Stay away from AMS parts, they have a history of being subpar and coming apart, exploding, ect... if you're going to upgrade the fuel rail go with the 300* one: http://www.importpartspro.com/300dehiflvgf.html and go with nismo injectors or sard or something of the like. Hope that helps some.

z32loverboy,

The machine shop bit I was planning on already, but that is great advice about the wiseco pistons and the stock rods. The intercooler bit was mostly just curiosity, so sticking with upgraded SMIC's sounds like a better plan.

As far as AMS parts goes, I hadn't heard anything either way about their reliability. Do you think 850cc injectors are the best size or would slightly smaller 740cc injectors be capable of meeting my horsepower goals? I'd love a set of Perrin fuel rails, but they don't appear to have a 300ZX compatible application.

Yeah the 300* fuel rails are super nice. They're on my TT build list for sure. On the injectors I would call SpecialtyZ or ConceptZ and ask them, They're more knowledgeable than I am on what injector will supply enough fuel. Maybe some of the other members would know, I haven't dealt with an application needing that large of a injector myself so far. Also, you'll probably need a better fuel pump and upgraded driveshaft (just to be safe).

For your power goals the 740 Nismos are the best injectors hands down. If you need more fuel (which with 600whp you wont) you will need to switch to topfeeds. Either way DO NO use AMS parts, they are s*** quality and are immoral as a company.
