where the hell can I get one and how much?

Proof that it exists:http://www.jdm-option.com/eng/....html

I can probably work some contacts to get some, but it probably wouldn't be worthwhile to get just ONE from japan, so if anybody is seriously interested (think of having the pull of a 4.08 with the top end of a 3.56!!) then let me know and i'll do some research on it.

AMZ sells them for $9k and also sells the Tomei sequential 6-speed for $13k. For most street car setups, you'll have a wide enough power band that the 5-speed would be more beneficial, especially when it comes to highway fuel economy.

If you're building an all out race car where you have a narrow power band up in the redline area, these trannies would definitely be the way to go as the closer gear ratios would keep you in the power band better (much like a standard N/A engine setup with a 6-speed). In the end though, most boosted cars tend to do better with wider gearing really.

I have actually read about a Z with a 6-speed in it. It cost some serious dough.

They're a boatload of money and IMO not worth the expense. As mtcookson said, the 5spd that is in the car will serve you well.

Ya just got my response back from HKS japan, they sell the transmission kit (that requires some custom work for starter mount etc) for 650,000 jpy (~5500US$) so ya, i think a 97+ jspec 5speed would be best considering that vg's don't like high rpm without some equally expensive JUN components.
