Im going to be upgrading my speakers as soon as i decide what i want. Im planning on getting 6.5 inch components for the front, and matching (6.5) coaxial speakers for the rear. Im going through ebay, and want to spend $110 (+ or - $20) on just the components. Ive had, and like, the alpine type r speakers. Ive also been looking at the infinity kappas. I will not be amplifying the speakers immediately, But will probably do that this summer. I like the kappas for the smaller mounting depth, but i dont know how they line up the the alpines (which mount like 3" deep!). Any suggestions are welcome, im just looking for the best components that i can get for arround $120.

Thanks alot for your help, and please feel free to point out any vague-ness of my post, ill try my best to clarify.

I picked up some Infinity Kappa 63.7i 3-ways that I love, back in May. Haven't amplified em though, but I don't think I've ever heard a complaint about Infinity's.

You can find them for about $115 if you search for them on Pricegrabber.com or Bizrate.com.

This link might work for ya: http://www.pricegrabber.com/se...63.7i

165K2Ps are $374.00

But for me to get them for someone else(risking my benefits, and possibly my job) would require atleast half of retail.

So $500.

I'd recommend the 165V2s or the 165KFs though. The KFs sound almost the exact same as the K2Ps. The polyglass(V2s) are very nice too.

For me V2s = $153 and KFs = $204

If you want any of them I'll need half the retail price, minimum.

Note, I also get 65% off of JL audio, or 70% if you order a few of their ECS wires too.

70% off of MTX also.

YOU STILL SUCK!

The biggest concern I have when picking a 6.5" component set is the depth of the woofer. If it's over 2.68", the magnet will hit the window without modifying my mounting bracket. Ideally, I'd rather keep the speaker depth at 2.5" or less just to give me room for the window to move.

*edit* Fixed my info.

Check out focals "Slim" series.

IIRC they're only 2" deep

The K2 series doesn't have a slim line, but the polyglass does. I'd go that route.

I would suggest getting some Infinity Reference 6010CS components for the doors and Infinity Reference 6012i coaxials in the rear deck. I have these in my 90 coupe and the sound perfect. All speakers are powered by an Alpine CD headunit by the way. Not too shabby for UNDER $150 for both sets....brand spankin' N E W (Ebay)!!!!!!!!!!

Are you sure they will fit @ 3" deep? I have an S13 hatch and with the window all the way down there is only ~2.5" of depth from the sheet metal. With the ebay PVC adapter plates (they are 1/4" thick) that gives ~2.75" of mounting depth, not 3". If this is their depth, they will most likely not fit.

just got one door done, it fits with the window down, just very very close. I used a .25 inch piece of plywood, then covered both sides with peel' n' seal. Without the layers of peel and seal, it would not have fit.

I also found a nice place to mount the crossovers, if anybody has not discovered this by themselves. There is a part of the door panel comes out and meets the dash, under this is a perfect hole to mount the crossover to the door.

if i can get my hands on a digi camera, ill share some pictures.

glad they fit. Yeah, a pic would help. i'm not sure i understand what you're talking about. I couldn't find an adequate place to mount mine behind the door panel and ended up mounting them on the outside of the door panel in the storage slot. I think it looks bad, but everyone who has seen it says it looks fine. At least I know that it won't get wet.

This is not my car, but i can get the point across. I just screwed it into the door so that the curve in the door panel just rolls right over it. I put it on the dry side of the plastic, but im still a little worried about the moisture.

the top right of the panel is where i mounted mine.

You have power windows, I don't. If my window crank was not where it is I could have mounted my crossover where I think you are referring to, but I couldn't because the handle was in the way. If you mounted it on the door against the plastic and under the inside of the door panel, then moisture should not be an issue for you.

maybe i am misunderstanding you, but with my tweeter placement and the design of my door, I couldn't find anywhere for the crossover under the panel. I tried test fitting it too, and finally decided they would not fit and that the easiest place to mount them was on the door panel inside the storage compartment. Remember, different component systems have different sized crossovers too, so there's no guarentee of fitment.

Why mot just mount the crossover inside the actual door, not just the panel.

I've got my rear crossovers(hatchback) in the hatch. Never had a problem with water

The hatch is a bit different than the inside of the door. The inside of the door, I assume you mean b/t the inner and outer door sheet metal, such as the area that the window occupies, is not a good place to put a crossover. It exposes the crossover to too much moisture and rain water that drips down past the weatherstripping (this is especially of concern for car like mine that is 17yrs old). If the crossover gets wet, it is just like any other piece of electronic equipment that gets wet, not good. Most installers I have talked w/say it is not a good idea either, but many do it bc it's quicker and most clients don't know any better. They wrap it in several layers of thick plastic and tape the ends, many still say that it is not the best place for the crossover though.

Here's the thread w/pics of my install. It's about 2/3 of the way down the page. I know somethings look ghetto, but I did the best I could w/the tools I have and there are explanations w/the pics. It was my first major install and I did it all myself. zerothread?id=218443

AH, gotcha.

Well crap. I should probably drill some drain holes in the doors then. I dynamated them completely!

I personally do both the inside of the exterior sheetmetal and the part that the door panel mounts to.

I love that "thud" that the metal makes now

Yeah, dynamat is nice. I've completely dynamated one car, and I mean completely, and parts of several others but I don't want to do my entire 240. I plan on stripping down one day and glass beading it. so it would be a waste of time and money to do the whole car. The thud is nice. What else is nice is when your hatch lid goes from a bag of rattling cans to just a slight buzzing and occasional rattle. makes me happy

Simple fix. Have one car for the rain/snow/cold/daily driving, then another one to drive when it's nice and sunny on the weekends. You then install the system in the weekend car.

**Off topic**PMQ, have you placed your order yet? I might be out of the market for Focals for a while. I'm wanting to pick up another S2k, but this one is in Delaware!? It's triple black, '03, 36.5k miles and vortech supercharged. My audio budget would be spent on getting the car to KS. Though if I sell the super, I'd be back in the game.

Looney: I have a new recommendation. I just heard some components that I can guarantee that you'll fall in love with, I know I did.

They are from a company called DLS

I listened to their $350 set of 6.5" components. They sounded amazing.

They also had a set of Morel $1500 components that we A/Bed them against. They sounded very similar!

I'm going to recommend you go this route, I think I'm going to also.
