So, I'm considering buying a 2000 I30, AT of course. I've heard before that the auto trannys out of the 5th gen maxima/ I30 have some major problems. Is there any truth to this?

Not that I'm aware of. Of course I'd want to find one that has had proper maintenance performed.

I've heard problems with the 6th Gen, 2004 in particular but not much in 5th gen. Given the age of the car, due diligence is a must. Check the car for signs of collision or flood damage and the engine for possible overheat and/or fluid leaks. Check level and color of ATF (pinkish red when new). Test drive the car on a highway and on city streets so you can check for wheel alignment, suspension, wind noise, vibration, etc. When safe to do so, brake hard to check for warped rotor, etc. Summer is just around the corner so ensure the AC is working good as well as other accessories. The CEL must come ON with Igintion ON but must go out once the engine is running.
