Hi all,

I recently bought a 1987 Pathfinder SE. It's whining in 5th gear when accelerating and a little bit in 3rd. How much whine (if any) is normal? Thinking it may be a bearing but wanted some advice before taking it to the mechanic.

I drained and filled the transmission fluid today with a little under 5 quarts of Redline and it's still whining. Some metal shavings came out but not a ton. It's been relatively well-maintained, including frequent transmission services. I'm thinking it may be worth filling it with another quart or so of fluid.

It does need a new master cylinder (already ordered the part) and a clutch fluid flush.

I've been searching the forums but any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I used to have a '91 XE but never had the common whine issue known in the manual transmissions of these WD21 models. There is a technical service bulletin that addresses this but I can't find a link to an actual copy of it. It's NTB97002 https://www.obd-codes.com/tsb/1987/nissan/pathfinder/ EXHIBITING A WHINE NOISE WHILE DRIVING IN ALL FORWARD GEARS EXCEPT 4TH

I was reading a forum posting that indicated, according to the TSB, you have to overfill the transmission to deal with this whine. https://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum ... apacities/

This issue had been corrected in the R50 model introduction. I guess one could say it is abnormally normal for the WD21 transmissions to whine

Thanks for your reply. I'll look into the TSB some more, I hadn't seen that one. I did overfill the transmission but not the full 5.1L.
