My 89 auto hatch doesnt shift right. it will shift fine in drive until about 3k rpms in 2nd gear, then it slips, but will grab slightly at 4500. either way it will not shift out of second. so i'm usually stuck drivin in 2 at 40 mph's to work.

as you can imagine, this is no good. my 240 is my only car and i must still get to work every day. I am not too sure on what i want to do, other than get it fixed. Depending on the cost, i might just get someone to swap a used auto trans in, or pay the $ to get someone to do the 5 speed swap, just cuz now would be a good time. the car is paid off, so also depending on if the bank will give me $, i might just have to buy another car and just let the 240 sleep in the garage. either way, i ened to do somehting now.

If i were to pay osmeone to do the 5spd swap, what should i expect to pay? what would you pay to have someone do the work for you?

Man dont go paying someone to do it for u. I did it myself and im 16.... I didnt have the slightest clue at the time but i know now. If u really need help man ill make the trip to delaware to see u. But atm my 240 jumped timing and all the pistons hit the valves so that wasnt anygood so im gonna try to put a rb26dett if i cant find out how to. It might be good for u just to go ahead and drop an sr20 in it? i can get everything on those for like 1800 by http://www.ardperformance.com

when was the last time the auto trans fluid was changed? it sounds like you got old fluid in there

so when i change the fluid, fromn your experience, which is the best fluid to use? also, i havent actually looked under the car or anything to check, but can you drain the trans fluid without having to jack up the car to get to the plug? also, then i can just slowly pour all 8 quarts in the dipstick hole or is there an easier way?

you can if youre really skinny.otherwise, you need to put it on stands and drain it. close it up, put new stuff (mercon) (if you have any question about it, ask the guys at your parts store) start teh car and check your level while running. add more if desired.

freakin a. 6'3 and 210. guess i'll have to see if i'm 'skinny' enough. i only have 1 jack stand in my garage. so that doesnt help much. is there a possibility that the fluid is the problem? it definately hasnt been changed in awhile. not sure exactly how long.

so i looked at the fsm, and it doesnt say anything about draining the fluid through the drain plug. is the only way to remove the entire trans oil pan and then replace?

also...what should i expect to pay when i take my car to thedealer to replace the oil pan on the motor? its a tad bit dented and i want a new one.

you will need to remove the trans pan. you will also need a new gasket for it. Most gasket kits for other cars come with new filters, so the 240 kit will probably come with one. You'll need a funnel to replace the transmission fluid. Also, don't be surprised if you don't get all the fluid down in there. The torque converter doesn't empty it's fluid completely most times.

You will only need to jack one end up and put it on stands. From what you said, it sounds like you have only one stand. Get another stand so you can put then under both sides of the car.

Check http://www.everythingnissan.com before going to a dealership for a new oil pan. They're a wholesaler, so they undercut prices from the dealers. You can probably just drop your oil pan and take a block of wood and a deadblow hammer and bang the dent out and save you some money.

i think i'm gonna just take it to western auto tomorrow and have them change the trans fluid. i just want to see what the problem is. i'll worry about the oil pan later.

Hey if it is more serious and u need to buy new transmission why not just do the sr20 swap?

cuz i can get 500-1000 easier than i can get 4 or 5k. plus my ka24e only has ~40k miles ok it. definately should have done 5 speed swap when i got the new motor, but my friend didnt want to do it. maybe if i throw enough $ in his face he will.

i did my auto to manual swap in a week and total cost was about $350. My first major upgrade i have done to my car and im no car mechanic whats so ever just do lots of research in these forums and make sure you have all the parts and tools and you will be done in less than a week. Buying a 240sx manual would also help you.just get a use transmission i got my for $55 bucks at a junk yard.
