Today i was driving home and i began to notice a noise which seems like its coming from my shifter or something attached to my shifter in the transmission. Whenever i am decelerating it makes a metalic rattling noise comes from under my shifter. I wiggled the shifter to see if it was in a weird position or something but that did nothing. I also noticed the noise when i clutch in and shift gears. i have no idea as to what this could be any info would be great.

posibbly throwout bearing. trans needs to come out to inspect it.

the strange thing is that when driving today the noise did not show up. if it was the throw out bearing why would it be doing this and then stopping all of a sudden? also if it was the throw out bearing why would it be making the noise when i put the clutch in? i also wanted to add that the noise slows down as the car does, i.e coming to a stop the rattling will become slower and slower until stopped.

probably not the T/O bearing if it comes and goes. but when your clutch is in you are putting pressure on the T/O bearing since it is pressing on the pressure plate.

the new way you have described your probalem I am guessing it might be your dust sheild where the drive shaft goes in the trans. it may be rubbing the drive shaft sheild.

if it is the dust shield rubbing the drive shaft would i notice a difference in the cars performance. so far i have not witnessed anything different in the way the car drives except for this strange noise. also do you think i should take the car to the local mechanic to check it out?(btw, thanks for the info so far)

no would not effect drivability. if you can get it up on jack stands with the rear wheels lifted off the ground you could crawl underneath and spin the drive shaft by hand while giving a little force up ward and downward. see if it rubs. you can usually see where the dust shield is extreamly close to the shafts sheild.

Could be a intermittent center countershaft bearing beginning to fail. Release bearings tend to make noise when the clutch is pushed in. The center countershaft bearing takes a very large amount of load and the bearing cage comes apart. Sometimes when you drain the gear box you find this cage stuck to the drain magnet.

I have a 96 Nissan Maxima.

Have you had any work done to your cv axles lately??

Anything like that?

Also your CV Axle seals could be bad, lets hope not. Mine went bad and all the transmission fluid leaked out and I went to Miami about a 4 hour drive and it started making this metal grinding noise and it got worse. If I were you I would check the transmission Fluid Level. It is 80/90 gear oil I believe and you can buy it at any Auto Place. You have to Jacke it up and there is a plug towards the front of the vehice. Pop that out and see what is in there. Or just pull the axle out and see if it has fluid in there. If it does then you are safe.

I ended up having to get a replacement transmission but the auto place that did my cv axles paid for it since they forgot to replace a pair of 10 dollar seals.

Whenever I change the cv axles I always replace both seals and I use genuine nissan parts.

If the dust shield is removed would anything negative result?

The noise happens when the clutch is out also, but only when my foot is lightly on the accelerator or completely off of it.

I havent done anything with the CV Axle. I also dont notice any leakage of fluids. I will check the transmission fluid level if it isnt the dust shield.

Thanks for the info everyone, i'll post up if i find anything new.

240's are rear wheel drive. the cv axels are not attached to the trans.

you might get dust on the output shaft seal which MIGHT develop a leak over time. no major adverse effects can be expected though.

I also have the same problem. It all started after I installed an LSD. A couple weeks after that I replaced my clutch, installing a new pilot and throw out bearing. This sound is so freakin annoying when the windows are down!I'm thinking it might be caused by the pilot bearing because when I installed the clutch it was really a pain to get the shaft in the pilot bearing. I was working on it for awhile and then bam it went right in--- I am worried that i pushed the bearing all the way to the back preventing it from centering the shaft, if thats possible?I think i might take it down to check this summer.

But the the pilot bearing could be a reason why yours is making noise too.
