I have a 92 pickup 4cyl 4wd 5spd trans.I was in 2nd,moved the shifter to neutral, didn't bind make noise or anything.Tried to shift to 3rd but it wouldn't go into gear,or any other position.I thought it was in neutral so I released the clutch and pulled off the road. When my speed hit about 10mph,the truck shuddered and I knew that 2nd was still engaged.Felt like a roll pin holding the shift fork on the rod fell out.Anyone else had this problem and how hard is it to repair? Is it safe to pull the transfer case before the transmission to lighten the load?Thank you.

its hard to seperate them in the truck. but if you can it is perfectly safe. it sounds like the pin to me as well. You will need to tear down the trans to inspect for the problem. before you do. Pull the shifter covers off and remove the upper plate for the shifter and see if just the shifter rods roll pin came out it is right in that plate.

I pulled the cover, all you can see is the bracket the shifter mates with.Everything else is forward from that out of reach without atleast removing the transfer case. With the engine off,I can engage atleast reverse but she won't move.I was careful not to give too much clutch so as not to blow it apart.I think it's the pin in the fork.Is there anything I should beware of,like springs, during this operation to replace the pin?

yea you want to take note of the layout of the detent springs and balls. make sure you get them back where they came from. The shifter socket in the trans has a roll pin in it. this is the socket the shifter end moves to change gears. If you removed the pivot plate the shifter pivots in you should see the rod and socket right there.

I've removed the pivot plate and can see the rod and socket and appear to be alright. With the engine off I can shift to 3rd,4th and 5th.In rev, start the engine but she won't move because 2nd is still engaged. The fork must have fell off the rod because it won't shift to 1st or 2nd position with engine running or not.Are there any special tools required? As for the springs and balls, during dissambly, all come flying out like a jack in the box are they?I've pulled and replaced lots of trannies ,auto and stick, but never been inside one.Just a little paranoid I guess.LOL. Thank you very much for your help. Ed

just remove the bolt slowly the spring will be butted up against it. pull the spring out then get one of those telescoping magnets from autozone and stick it in the bore the spring came out of ,when you withdraw the magnet the ball should be stuck to it.
