My dad and I were discussing biodiesel today and were talking about working on a Mercedes turbo diesel conversion.

My questions are:

1. Are there any 4cyl diesel swaps that any of you guys have heard of?

2. How much usable space is there in a 510 engine bay?

Im more concerned with length and transmission tunnel dimensions than engine bay width.

I usually post in the RB forum, so I know how quick people can be to jump in and say search newb. Im not a Nissan newb. Ive worked at a performance shop building engines as well as a performance fuel injector shop. I have had my RB25 for 4 years and made my mount kit and turned every single bolt on the car to get it running. Wiring doesnt scare me at all as long as I have schematics. So, in short, Im confident in my ability to swap about anything.

Any input you guys may have, as long as it is constructive and insightful will be welcomed whether it is for against this idea.

Thanks,Jody

I would think that the SD22 diesel used in the early 80s Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups along with it's transmission would be a good fit in a 510. As far as engine bay size, I've seen 510s with FJ20s, SR20s, KA24s, VG30s, etc. I've never actually seen one with a V8 though I've heard of them.

A LD20 turbo was made, but used mostly in forklifts and as industrial engines.

Mercedes didn't produce any four-cylinder turbodiesels;only five and six cylinder tds.

Earlier Sentras ran with a diesel motor. The CD17...I don't know much about it but I do know you could get them in the Sentras back in the day.

Wrong? Maybe just a lil bit, but imagine a propane injected turbo diesel 510.....

There is lots of room. I was considering a diesel swap and I would go with the LD20T. you can pick them up from JESCO in Cali. or from Austraila.... which is actually cheaper with the shipping.

The LD20T is a straight drop-in swap...
