So my MAF was replaced at goodyear to the tune of $600. I know, I paid way too much. I couldnt do it myself coz I needed to be in NV by tuesday. Now, I have codes 505 (IACV) and 325 (Knock sensor). Not so concerned with 325, but I am with the 505. I'm out of money so is this thing replaceable by me? Where is it. any pics? I hope it can wait til next month.

Thx!

BTW, made it to NV just fine.

Well, just happened to be on here - good your trip went well.

Unfortunately 505 codes can get kind of expensive to fix. The IACV is the intake air control valve, and it is on the throttle body. You can probably do it your self, but the lowest price you will probably see is about 120.00 on ebay.

Pathys have a problem with 505 - it means the IACV is bad, and you need to replace it pretty quickly. They end up sending too much voltage to the Engine computer, and Danage a part in the computer. If your truck is idling badly, that may have happened. The computer can be pretty easily removed and sent away for repair - that runs from 100.00 to 300.00 depending on who you send it to.

So, is the truck idling ok?

No, the ECM ( engine computer) must be in the vehicle - it controls the engine operation. However, because it is idling ok, your computer is probably fine.

So if you drive the truck as little as possible - take the bus, catch a ride with a coworker, etc. you may very well just have to swap out the IACV. (don;t buy a used one on ebay!)

The other thing to do before you order a new one is to check the plug for the IACV and make sure it is properly plugged in. Every now and then someone goofs.

I will look thru the service manual and post some links to some pages so you can see how you can do the IACV. Might take a while! Haven't looked for a Youtube video yet, either.

The green indicators in this picture show where the IACV is (thanks Towncivilian)

It's not anywhere near the MAF, so it's pretty unlikely that it was touched when they did the work. I'm willing to bet money yours is already bad; I'd replace it as soon as feasibly possible and don't drive it in the meantime. It's something that is pretty much guaranteed to go bad over time anyway, so even if it isn't, you'll save yourself the trouble later. Check out my tips on replacing it here.

Oh, whoops! That's a picture for a 2001+! Here's a diagram from the FSM of yours:

and here's a product link to help you track it down:

I'm curious if someone else knows, though: do the ECMs on pre-2001s get fried by a bad IACV, or is that a 01-04 problem?

That's the first thing that came to mind. Check it thoroughly.

As for the other question re: pre 2001's having this problem, I have never seen it on any other vintage other than the 2001-2004 R50's.

My take on it is, if the IACV is properly plugged in, I'd source a new one and replace it PDQ.

Rosyjazz... Atraudes.... I was just logging back on to say I realized I answered Rosyjazz wrong. I don't know where my brain was, it was clearly not working.
I answered for a 2001 - 2003.

Rosyjazz, lets start over. The IACV on your 97 does not cause the problems it does on the later Pathy's - yours does not fail and take out the computer. Your IACV may just need to be cleaned. They get carbon buildup in them. Since your truck is idling ok at this point, there is a good chance that is what it needs.

Bad news is that it is under the intake plenum, and that needs to come off to get to it. You would want to do the knock sensor at the same time as the intake plenum has to be removed to get to that as well.

I don't know exactly what Goodyear did, but they may have done an idle relearn procedure after they replaced your MAF - would not surprise me. That is done by unplugging the IACV, then replugging it in according to a procedure in the manual.

Sorry for the goof!
