$500 v6 pathfinder w/ transmission trouble ? should I buy it?

Thinking of buying a friends v6 pathfinder. I think its around a 94. if not its close. 300k on the odometer and the engine sounds good. Car is beat up but has leather heated seats, and he is only wanting $500. yeah thats right $500! The only problem he has with it is he says it has a hrad shift from 1st into 2nd. is this a common prob? is it any easy fix. Apparently someone gave him this truck & it had been sitting in a backyard forever becuase there was an electrical drain. He picked it up and just replaced the radio & that solved the problem. he's been driving it a few months. Anything else I should look for in these trucks? It aint pretty but the price is right & I dont mind doin a lil work

Its 4 X 4. Gonna go pick it up on saturday. It needs a paint job and a tune up , other than that i think Ill be good to go. I'll post pics when I get it
