Hi guys,

I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra (offroad)It's been now 13k and service is due.My Nissan dealership suggested a tire rotation which of course i went with.I've heard somewhere that it is a good idea to do a 5 tire rotation (including spare) to wear all 5 more or less equally. My Nissan dealership disagreed on this and recommended the standard 4 tire rotation instead.

I've read the manual but there are no recommendations listed or any word about shoving 5th tire in the rotation.

So what is really the best way? the 5 tire or the usual 4 tire rotation for my vehicle? Does Nissan itself recommend that or the other method? From my prospective 5 tire rotation makes sense, but i am fairly rookie when it comes to vehicles to begin with.

I hope you can help, thanks!

1. In cars today, the spare is often not the same kind of tire or wheel as the other four. They are low-use temporaries. So, putting them on would be a serious problem.

2. With directional tires, you cannot really do a five-tire rotation. The left tires must stay on the left side of the car, and the right tires on the right. Again, better done with a four-tire "front-back rotation".

3. With identical, non-directional, five tires and wheels, I would do a complete five-tire rotation, since I would want to also replace the fifth tire regularly too! Basically because rubber dies with age, independently of the tread wear, and I would not want to rely on any tire that is more than six years old (from date of manufacture).

Do the 4 wheel, a worn tire is a shorter tire, and this can cause wear on the differential if you put the fresh tire on the rear with a relatively worn tire.

A valid point.

However, with often enough rotations (like every 3k miles or so), the effect will be minimal for most tires. You almost would get that kind of delta difference (like about 1/32" perhaps) by just not having the tire inflated correctly.

So, I'd rotate rather than worry about the effect on the differential.

Thanks guys, i really appreciate your help.

After digging abit more into the manual, it has one tiny line that states "Do not include spare in the tire rotation". Also, aparently the spare is not equiped with the sensor which would trigger a false alarm if the spare is put to action.

I wonder whether they balance wheels after each rotation?

Once again, thanks a lot!
