5 Speed trans problem

I have a 93 5 speed coupe - 5th gear becomes locked out periodically.One day I will have 5th and next I wont. It seems to change when I have parked the car put it into reverse. It is in gear but it wont ingage right away - when I start to let the clutch out it kinda falls into gear with a clunk and after that I am locked out of 5th. Help - I thought it might be the shift cuz it was real loose so I put in a short shifter and no change any ideas????

If everything works fine except 5th then the 5th gear syncro is prolly pretty much gone. Time for a rebuild or a new transmission!

5th geear works fine when I can get it into the gear - like I said sometimes it goes in just fine and sometimes it doesn't.

Was fifth a problem before the shifter install? Sounds like a syncro prob.

yes - it would work for a day or two and then it wouldn't. Is there a possiblity of a nut working loose that would affect 5th and reverse?

I sometimes leave it in reverse overnite and when I go to back out it does not immediately start moving - it feels like it falls into gear with a clunk and then works fine. If I start out with the gear in 1st and then go to reverse it is OK.
